How to download Instagram Reels on any device
Instagram’s bookmark icon does not save a file. It adds the Reel to a private collection inside the app, which disappears if the creator deletes the post or blocks you. If you want a copy that survives, you need the MP4 itself. Here is how that works on each platform.
Get the link first
Every method starts the same way. Open the Reel, tap the share arrow or the three-dot menu, and choose Copy link. On a computer, the URL in the address bar is already what you need. A valid link contains /reel/ or /p/ followed by a short code.
On Android
- Paste the link into the downloader and press Download.
- Tap the 1080p button in the results.
- Chrome saves to Internal storage → Download.
- The video appears in your gallery once the media scanner picks it up, usually within a minute.
On iPhone and iPad
- Paste the link and press Download.
- Safari asks to confirm the download — tap Download.
- Open the Files app and look under Downloads.
- Long-press the video and choose Save to Photos if you want it in your camera roll.
On Windows and Mac
The browser handles it directly. The file lands in your usual Downloads folder and opens in any player. This is the easiest route if you plan to edit the clip afterwards.
Why not just screen record?
Screen recording captures your display, not the source. You get whatever resolution your screen is, plus the interface, plus any notification that arrives mid-recording, and the audio is re-encoded. Downloading the MP4 avoids all of that and takes less time.
A note on re-posting
Saving a Reel for yourself is one thing; publishing it as your own is another. The video belongs to whoever made it. If you want to share it, use Instagram’s own share and remix features, or ask the creator first.
